Details

Powder handling in hazardous industrial facilities demands equipment that is safe, reliable, and easy for operators to use. This ATEX drum handling lift is designed for a Class I, Div 2 / ATEX Zone 22 (Cat 3) environments. It handles 200 lb. [≈90 kg] drums of powder and transfers them into an elevated process hopper.

The lift is designed to pick a drum up from the floor, raise it so the bottom of the discharge cone is about 8 ft [2.4 m] above the floor, reach out 4 ft3 in [1.30 m] horizontally, then rotate to tip and empty the drum into a mezzanine level hopper. A 316L stainless steel funnel with a valve is built in to guide the powder from the drum into the hopper, helping reduce dust and spillage.

Primary structural components are manufactured from 303/304 stainless steel for general wash down and corrosion resistance, while product contact and high exposure surfaces use 316L stainless steel to withstand frequent cleaning with corrosive sanitizers and aggressive wash down chemicals. An extended powered clamp with a builtin force limiter and fixed wrists grips the 200 lb. stainless steel drums firmly while helping prevent over tightening. The lift offers 360degree powered rotation so the operator can turn the drum into the right position for pouring without moving the base of the lift, which improves ergonomics and speeds up the process in tight spaces.

The customer also wanted controls that are simple to understand and service. Instead of a complex control system, the lift uses straightforward pushbutton and switch controls on a dedicated panel. From this panel, the operator can raise and lower the drum, extend and retract the arm, open and close the clamp, and rotate the drum with clear, direct controls that maintenance and operations staff can troubleshoot easily. In areas where full stainless steel is not required, certain parts can be supplied in painted carbon steel, giving the customer flexibility to balance corrosion resistance and cost.

By combining heavy duty powered lifting, full rotation ATEX drum handling, extended reach, and an integrated 316L stainless steel funnel, this hazardous area ATEX drum handling lift improves safety, reduces manual lifting, and makes powder transfer more consistent in Class I, Div 2 / ATEX Zone 22 environments. The same basic design—simple controls, stainless construction, powered clamp with force limiting, and controlled pouring—can be adapted for chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, battery materials, and other powder handling operations where drums need to be lifted over mezzanines and emptied cleanly into hoppers, reactors, mixers, or bulk handling systems.
